Day Trip to Mosquito Lagoon August 2015

Mosquito Lagoon is located in the northern part of the Indian River Lagoon system and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway of Florida. It extends from Ponce de León Inlet to the northern end of Merritt Island, and connects to the Indian River via the Haulover Canal. It overlaps both the Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The lagoon is one of the least developed regions on the east coast of Florida. For more than 20 miles, lush seagrasses cover flats where depths average less than three feet. In many areas, the water is only inches deep. Mosquito Lagoon supports the northernmost extent of red and black mangrove habitat, has low marsh and high marsh habitats, extensive oyster bars, and tidal flats. A resident population of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins call Mosquito Lagoon home. Canaveral National Seashore consists of a coastline that includes one of the world's foremost sea turtle nesting beaches.
Mosquito Lagoon is a very popular destination for critter watching, along with having amazing canoeing & kayaking opportunities. Visitors to this area can enjoy the true tranquility of nature.
We set off on a canoe expedition to Island 6 of Mosquito Lagoon this particular weekend. It was pretty warm day, but cooler in the shade of the island....and we did some swimming to cool off
