What to take on a paddling trip - The Logistics
For a day trip, you'll need adequote hydration (water) for each person, sun screen, and snacks. Everyone will have a PFD (personal float device), that we highly recommend you wear all the time on the wa ter. When rentaling boats from us, we will supply the PFD and paddles. You need your phone to contact us, and to take pictures. We recommend you keep it in a dry bag.
For an overnight, logistics are greater. Below is just a recommended list I use.
Chargers for my phone and other devices (I take 4 for a 5 day trip)
USB cable(s) for the chargers
Wet shoes (cheap kind)
Medicine (pain for paddling aches, benadryl, vitamins, fiber)
Deoderant
Tiny bottle of mouthwash
Toothpaste and brush
Toilet Paper
Soap bar
Soap dish
Umbrella (I sometimes take)
Rain coat
USB Fan (I can't live without one in the hot summer months)
Kayak skirt (for a sea kayak, canoes don't have)
Tiny Shovel
Extra batteries (the longer you are staying on the river the more you'll need)
Cooking Utensils, to include spoon, fork, knife, cups, plates, pots and pans
Food! ( my usual is cup of soup, cans of evaporated milk, protein bars, peanuts, snacks, beef jerky).
Seasoning optional for cooking
Sunscreen
Chair
Bug spray (I take Off and a flying insect spray can)
Food snacks (yeah, you won't like forgetting your food)
Coffee press with coffee
Towels (I bring an assortment to clean me and my cooking tools)
Lighter to start a fire
Gallon and quart size ziplock bags (numerous uses to include simple dry bags, and food leftovers)
Trash bags
Alcohol wipes
Extra Clothes
Bandanna (Bugs, heat, sun)
First Aid kit
Duct tape (you always take duct tape)
PFD with whistle (we can supply)
Kayak or Canoe with a paddle
A machete maybe
Camping Table (tiny and light weight)
Lights (I have some I can hang up, headlight and flashlight)
Dry bags (I use a dry bag for everything, and ONE for my key items, ie: wallet and phone)
Thermos (optional, but I light my coffee up till noon)
WATER ( at least 3 liters per person per day)
Mattress
Stakes
Tent or Hammock
Canopy tarp to go over your tent or hammock
Stove (I prefer the small butane type)
Extra stove fuel
Sleeping bag with a pillow
Big camera
** I carry alot but most of my gear is made for hiking and/or camping and is thus SMALL.
** Usually, you can carry more on a canoe than a kayak. I had all the above plus more on my sea kayak for a 5 day trip.
