Kayak vs Canoe
Kayaks VS Canoes
A canoe is a small boat, propelled by paddlers who kneel or sit on a raised seat and use paddles which usually have a blade at one end only. A canoe is normally used by two people.
A kayak is a slim boat, usually propelled by one kayaker who sits in a low seat and uses a double bladed paddle. They can be used by one or two people.
Some advantages of kayaks over canoes:
Kayaks are easier to paddle solo for beginners.
Kayaks are more maneuverable.
Kayaks can handle rougher conditions.
Kayaks are lighter to carry and easier to load on a roof rack.
Kayaks allow the paddler to be closer to the water.
Some advantages of canoes over kayaks:
Canoes have more room for gear (ice chests etc).
Canoes are more stable.
It is easier to adjust seating positions in canoes, and you can stand up in a canoe.
Canoes keep you dryer when there is water in the boat.
Canoes are easier to get in and out of.
So which is better? Ease-of-paddling & maneuverability
are major reasons why some people prefer kayaks to canoes. They are also suited
better to rough water. But, canoes have
better stability and are easier to get into and out of.
Which is better depends on the waterway and what you want to do. Both are fun!
We advise canoes for lake-hopping, quiet water & winding river. Kayaks are better for big open lakes as well as the ocean.
